When I first started reading The Confession , I could not put it down for two days. The novel is so fast-paced; I was practically breathless from trying to keep up with the storyline. John Grisham uses detailed character development and rampant judicial impropriety to draw the reader into the story.

"Part One: The Crime"

Readers are first introduced to the real killer, Travis Boyette, when he finds his way to a Lutheran church in Kansas and confesses to the senior pastor, Keith Schroeder. This confession gives us the title of Grisham's latest legal thriller. Boyette is in town serving probation at a half-way house. Apparently, Boyette is developing a conscience since he is suffering from an inoperable brain tumor and Boyette knows that an innocent man is about to be executed in just a few days.

The crime is the rape and murder of a seventeen-year-old girl, Nicole Yarber, in Sloane, TX nine years ago. When the murder first happened, an anonymous telephone call to the police leads to the questioning of Donte Drumm who attends high school with the victim. After hours of illegal questioning, Donte confesses to a crime he did not commit. This is the other confession which gives the novel its name. Donte thought they would find the real killer and he would be released.
