However, with new resources such as Etsy and Ebay it is possible for individuals to create their own vocational opportunity through entrepreneurship. A home-based business for a person with disabilities can be beneficial.
According the U.S. Census Bureau, 14.7 percent of people with disabilities are self-employed compared to just 8 percent of the general population. Starting one's own business can help the individual gain independence and a sense of ownership, while reducing the concerns that accompany traditional employment such as transportation, scheduling, and accommodations at the work setting.

The Office of Disability Employment Policy has valuable resources available for individuals and features successful individuals. Bob Douglas, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, founded the National Center for Therapeutic Riding which now serves more than 6,000 individuals. Fred Cherry, an injured veteran, is the President and CEO of a company that specializes in information technology. Ann Morris, who is completely blind, developed a business that sells products for people with vision loss. Like these individuals, there are individuals with cognitive disabilities, autism and other disabilities who have started business which allow them to utilize their strengths and experiences.
